Who we are

threadtoscreen is run by OnDesign Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 10832133). We decide how your information is used, which makes us the “controller” under UK data protection law.

What we store and why

You can use threadtoscreen without an account. We only hold information about you if you create one or leave a tip.

Your account: Your email address, and your first and last name if you add them. We use your email to send sign-in links. Your watch list, with any notes you write, is saved to your account so it’s on all your devices, along with the threads you’ve ranked (for the stats on your account page).Why we’re allowed to: it’s needed to provide the account you asked for.
News and updates by email: Only if you ticked the box to say yes. We keep a record of when you said yes or no, and the wording you saw. You can change your mind at any time on your Account page or with the unsubscribe link in any of those emails.Why we’re allowed to: your consent.
Tips: Tips are optional and paid through Stripe, on Stripe’s own checkout page. Stripe handles your card details and sends your receipt; we never see your card number. We see the amount, and the name and email address you give Stripe, and use them only to manage tips (for example, a refund). If you’re signed in, we fill in your email address on Stripe’s page to save you typing it; you can change it there.Why we’re allowed to: to take the payment you chose to make, and to keep the records UK tax law requires.
Keeping the service running: To stop abuse, we count how many new threads each connection analyses; the address is stored only as a one-way hash. We also count visits and how the site is used (for example, how many threads are analysed) with Umami, which doesn’t use cookies, never receives your email, name or notes, and respects your browser’s “Do Not Track” setting.Why we’re allowed to: our legitimate interest in keeping the site working, secure and affordable to run.
Reddit threads: For each thread you analyse we keep its ID, title and the ranked list of titles. Reddit usernames are replaced with anonymous labels before analysis and aren’t stored.
Where to watch: We guess your country from your connection (a country code our host adds to each request) or your browser’s language, to show the right streaming services. It isn’t stored.

We don’t sell your information, share it for advertising, or use it to make automated decisions about you.

Services we use

These companies process information for us, only to provide their part of the service:

Vercel hosts the site, and Neon hosts the database.
Resend sends our emails and, if you’ve said yes to news and updates, holds our mailing list (your email address and name). Its unsubscribe page updates your preference here too.
Stripe takes tips.
Umami counts visits, without cookies.
FetchLayer fetches threads from Reddit, and Anthropic reads the anonymised comments to pick out the titles. Neither receives anything about you.
TMDB provides posters and title details. Images load straight from TMDB, so it sees your connection’s address, as with any image on the web.

Some of these companies are based in, or store data in, the United States. Where information about you goes outside the UK, it’s protected by safeguards UK law recognises, such as the UK–US data bridge or approved contract terms.

How long we keep it

Your account is kept until you delete it. If you don’t sign in or use the site while signed in for 2 years, we delete it and everything saved to it automatically.
Deleting your account on the Account page removes your email, name, watch list, notes and consent record straight away. Copies in our database provider’s backups are overwritten within a few weeks.
Sign-in links expire after 15 minutes and are removed within a day. Signed-in sessions last 30 days.
Connection hashes used to prevent abuse are deleted after two days.
Tip records are kept by Stripe and by us for six years, as UK tax law requires.

Cookies and browser storage

We don’t use advertising or analytics cookies, and nothing tracks you across other sites, so there’s no cookie banner. We only use what the site needs to work:

A cookie that keeps you signed in, set when you sign in and removed when you sign out.
A short-lived cookie set when you ask for a sign-in link, so that opening the link in the same browser signs you straight in. It expires after 15 minutes.
Browser storage for your watch list (if you’re not signed in), recent threads and chosen country, so they’re there next time. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:

give you a copy of the information we hold about you
correct it if it’s wrong
delete it
limit how we use it, or stop using it (including for any use based on our legitimate interests)
give it to you in a format you can take elsewhere

You can do most of this yourself: edit your name, change your email preferences or delete your account on the Account page, and export your watch list from the Watch list page. For anything else, email hello@threadtoscreen.com. We’ll reply within one month.

If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

If we change this page in a way that matters, we’ll update the date at the top and, if you have an account, tell you by email.

How titles are ranked

Each person who recommends a title counts once. Upvotes add weight, shared across all the titles in a list. Replies agreeing with a recommendation add a little more. The person asking isn’t counted.

Exporting to Letterboxd

Exports are movies only, because Letterboxd doesn’t list TV series. To keep your order, create a new list on Letterboxd and use its Import option.
